Counselling in Victoria
The narrative practice of externalization assists people to explore the history and context of the arrival of the problem, investigating when and where it started to gain control. Instead of a person being seen as the problem, externalization positions the problem as the problem by asking questions such as:
How does the problem affect you in your daily life?
Does it interfere with your relationships?
How does the problem try to convince you that things will never get better?
Does the problem team up with other problems?
Have there been times when you have not listened to the voice of the problem? If so, how were you able to do this? Where were you and who was with you?
These types of questions lead people to view their problem from a different lens and takes blame away from self, focusing on a person’s skills and strengths instead.
